*What Are Cash Receipts?
Defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service, cash receipts refer to the total amount of crops or livestock sold in a calendar year.
1. Cattle & Calves
$11.56 billion in cash receipts
Texas ranks No. 1 in the nation for production of cattle and calves, producing nearly 14% of the U.S. total. As of Jan. 1, 2023, the state had an inventory of 12.5 million cattle and calves, including 4.3 million beef cattle.
2. Dairy Products & Milk
$4.22 billion in cash receipts
As of Jan. 1, 2023, Texas had an inventory of 650,000 dairy cows that produced more than 16 billion pounds of milk, equivalent to more than 25,500 pounds of milk per cow. The state ranks No. 4 in the nation for number of dairy cows.
3. Broilers
$4.18 billion in cash receipts
Texas ranks No. 5 in the nation for production of broilers (chickens raised for meat). The state’s broiler inventory totaled more than 723 million in 2022.
4. Upland Cotton
$2.71 billion in cash receipts
The Lone Star State leads the nation in cotton production. In 2022, Texas farmers harvested 2 million acres of upland cotton, resulting in the production of more than 3 million 480-pound bales.
5. Corn
$1.21 billion in cash receipts
In 2022, Texas farmers harvested more than 1.6 million acres of corn for grain and 260,000 acres of corn for silage, resulting in the production of nearly 153 million bushels of corn for grain and 3.9 million tons of corn for silage.
6. Chicken Eggs
$1.18 billion in cash receipts
Texas is the fifth-leading state in the nation for chicken egg production. The state produced more than 6.6 billion eggs in 2022, or nearly 552 million dozen eggs.
7. Hay
$711.6 million in cash receipts
Texas ranks as the nation’s No. 1 producer of hay. Farmers across the state harvested more than 4.3 million acres of hay in 2022, including 95,000 acres of alfalfa. The state produced a total of more than 7.3 million tons of the commodity that year, including nearly 400,000 tons of alfalfa.
8. Cottonseed
$521.3 million in cash receipts
Cottonseed is one of Texas’ top agriculture products. In fact, the state leads the U.S. in production of cottonseed, bringing in 940,000 tons of the commodity in 2022 – a whopping 45% of the U.S. total.
9. Sorghum
$380.2 million in cash receipts
Texas farmers harvested 950,000 acres of sorghum for grain and 175,000 acres of sorghum for silage in 2022, resulting in the production of more than 50 million bushels of sorghum for grain and more than 2.6 million tons of sorghum for silage. The state ranks No. 1 in the nation for production of sorghum for silage and No. 2 for production of sorghum for grain.
10. Wheat
$337.7 million in cash receipts
Texas’ wheat harvest spanned 5.3 million acres in 2022, resulting in the production of 39 million bushels of the crop. The Lone Star State ranks No. 7 in the U.S. for wheat production.
